Bad Habits That Can Damage Oral Health

Taking care of one's own teeth is one of the most important things we should do for our oral as well as overall health. However, many of us have bad oral habits that can damage our teeth. Listed below are a few bad oral habits.

  • Teeth Grinding

Teeth grinding, also called bruxism, affects a large percentage of the population. Many people who grind their teeth are unaware that they grind them! The symptoms of nighttime teeth grinding include jaw pain and headaches. If you think you might be grinding your teeth at night, talk to your dentist about treatment options that can help you stop this bad habit. If untreated, teeth grinding can lead to broken or cracked teeth, as well as severe damage to the surrounding tissue and bone structures. This can truly affect your oral health!

Treatment options for teeth grinding can include a custom-fitted mouth guard to lessen the effects of teeth grinding during sleep. However, prevention through lifestyle changes is the best option. Avoid alcohol and caffeine before bed, and try to avoid stressful situations as much as possible.

  • Chewing Ice

When ice is chewed, it can cause tiny cracks in tooth enamel and may also damage fillings or crowns. The constant abrasion from chewing on ice can also cause gum recession, which exposes the sensitive roots of the teeth. This exposure can lead to discomfort when eating hot or cold foods.

If you are craving something ice-cold, try drinking iced tea or water instead. You can also talk to your doctor about ways to cope with stress. Some people chew on things when they are nervous or upset. Try to find a healthier way to deal with your anxiety.

  • Nail Biting

Do your nails always look dirty and ragged? You may be biting them! This can cause tooth enamel to wear away and cause chips and cracks in your teeth. Over time, this can lead to a need for restorative treatment such as crowns, fillings, or a root canal. If you find yourself constantly biting your fingernails, try keeping them manicured and short. Wearing gloves can also help prevent you from giving in to your desire to bite. If you notice any changes in the shape or color of your teeth, be sure to make an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible.

  • Aggressive Brushing

Teeth need protection from damage by plaque acids that dissolve tooth enamel and erode the tooth structure below the gum line. You can help your teeth stay strong by avoiding habits that cause excessive wear from friction, such as hard toothbrushes or vigorous brushing. Brush for two to three minutes and use a soft-bristled brush held at a 45-degree angle about a half-inch from the gum line. Gently brush all areas in the mouth, including the insides of the cheeks and the tongue. Replace your toothbrush every three to four months or when the bristles are frayed. Most electric toothbrushes have a two-minute timer that helps guide proper brushing time.
